When extraction of your remaining teeth becomes unavoidable, an Immediate Denture or an Initial Placement Denture is a solution. The Denturist will explain your options to you during the consultation appointment.
Immediate Dentures
To avoid the situation of being without teeth, our Denturist will initiate the immediate denture technique. The procedures are initiated before your teeth are extracted. An impression is taken of your existing natural teeth and gums and is used to fabricate a denture in the likeness of your natural teeth. You will not see or have much input into the esthetics or appearance of the denture as all of the work is created in the laboratory. The denture will be made available to your dentist so that they can insert it immediately upon extraction of your natural teeth.
Initial Placement Dentures
Initial placement dentures are fabricated shortly after your natural teeth have been extracted. Prior to extraction, an impression will be taken to give us a record of the shape and size of your natural teeth. After the extraction, impressions of the gums will be taken and a wax try-in of your denture will be fabricated and shown to you. This appointment gives you the opportunity to express your preferences as to the appearance of your new dentures. Such things as size and colour of tooth can be considered. This also allows the Denturist the opportunity to assess and address your needs and expectations.
Please note:
As healing occurs, the oral tissues recede, so denture adjustments may be required. Follow-up appointments with the Denturist are necessary. To maintain optimum fit and comfort, a temporary liner or tissue conditioner may be placed in the denture. During the next few months, bone and gum tissues will continue to shrink, however, the rate of change decreases with time. This is a natural occurrence which is to be expected. After the healing process is complete, a new permanent denture will be made or the existing dentures will be relined or rebased to ensure the most comfortable fit possible.
